Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell will fight for the light heavyweight title for a third time at UFC 57 on Feb. 5, according to a story published in the Portland Tribune, a thrice-weekly newspaper in Couture's hometown of Portland, Oregon.
The news came as the Tribune's Jason Vonderschmit, who often covers MMA for the paper, authored a story about Matt Lindland's recent release from the company.
Here's an except from the Tribune story:
(Dana) White says the much anticipated rubber match between Couture and light-heavyweight champ Chuck Liddell probably will take place Feb. 4, the night before the Super Bowl. The UFC plans to sign another three-fight deal with Couture, 42, who pocketed $225,000 after beating Mike Van Arsdale last month.
“They put the fight off, they risk losing the momentum," says Couture, who got knocked out by Liddell in April. “Everybody’s talking about that fight."
The next Sportfight, which Lindland and Couture promote, will be Sept. 16 at the Rose Garden. Eleven fights currently are on the card, Lindland says. … Chael Sonnen, a fighter and promoter who wrestled at West Linn High and the University of Oregon, has been signed by the UFC. He makes his debut Oct. 7 in Connecticut.
